Our History

Founding
1975
Executive Directors Cumbee & Van Wagner

The Life Enrichment Center was born, a nonprofit satellite of North Carolina Baptist Hospital’s School of Pastoral Care. Our Board of Directors comprised of local ministers, and rounding out the staff was a part-time counselor and a part-time secretary.

Independence
1986
Executive Director Ferrell

The Life Enrichment Center terminated its satellite relationship and became an autonomous center with four full-time counselors, three part-time counselors, a secretary, and three students. The Center operates out of the offices at White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Feminism
1992

A feminist-centered approach to leadership and finances was implemented at the Center.

Triangle Pastoral Counseling
1996
Co-Directors Mericle & McLaughlin (1993)

The Life Enrichment Center changes its name to Triangle Pastoral Counseling.

New Office Space, Affiliation

Leadership Team Hester, Holbert, & Luper

Two new condos were purchased at our Millbrook location, the Narrative model was introduced, and our “Norms of Decision Making” were implemented. Our Center officially became affiliated with the Solihten Institute (formally, the Samaritan Institute).

New Case Model
2001
Center Director Luper

Our case model changed from a medical standpoint to a narrative one. We created the Board/Staff teams to address the Center’s operation, administrative, and outreach needs.

Our Center recruited additional staff members focusing on diversity of both race and faith. We received a Sustaining Pastoral Excellence grant from the Lilly Foundation.
